South Korean speed skater Kim Min-sun has grabbed her second straight medal at the annual world championships.

Kim captured bronze in the women's 500 meters at the International Skating Union (ISU) World Speed Skating Single Distances Championships at Hamar Olympic Hall in Hamar, Norway, on Friday (local time), with a time of 37.73 seconds.

Femke Kok of the Netherlands won the gold medal in 37.50 seconds, and her fellow Dutch skater Jutta Leerdam got the silver medal in 37.69 seconds.

Kim had won her first career world championships medal with a silver in the 500m last year in Canada.

She had the fastest 100m split in the final with 10.39 seconds, an encouraging result for a skater who has often struggled with her start. Kim then pumped her fist after crossing the finish line.

Kim, 25, altered her training routines prior to this season so that she could peak in time for the Winter Olympics next February in Italy.

It cost Kim in the short term, though, as she was held off the podium during the ISU World Cup season after winning a 500m bronze medal in the season-opening event in November.

She gained some momentum by winning two gold medals at the Asian Winter Games and then added a World Cup silver medal in the 500m in February.

Her late-season surge culminated in the world championship bronze. (Yonhap)
