Tmap, which operates GPS navigation and taxi hailing services in South Korea, denied online rumors that its app was used for an alleged kidnapping attempt.

Tmap Mobility addressed the rumors in a post on its official Instagram page, clarifying that it had no connection to the incident which claimed to have occurred in Chungju, a city 150 kilometers south of Seoul. The rumor stemmed from a post on social media platform X uploaded on Monday, in which the writer alleged that their acquaintance was nearly abducted after using Tmap’s hired driver service last Friday.

According to the post, the driver who arrived appeared different from the photo registered on the app, and three other people accompanied the driver, gagging the acquaintance. The writer also claimed that when the acquaintance contacted Tmap after the incident, the company attempted to excuse the situation by claiming a "foreign driver" had been mistakenly registered on the app.

Tmap Mobility, however, said this was not true.

The company did not tell anyone that a driver had registered in error, adding that there was no record of the hired driver service being used during the time and date mentioned in the post.

It was reported by local media outlets that the person who initially made the claim has admitted to posting false information.
