National Museum of Korea loaning majority of artifacts on show

A six-month exhibition on Korean history from ancient to modern times will run through Aug.10 at Dresden’s Royal Palace, Residenzschloss.
“100 Ideas of Happiness: Art Treasures from Korea,” set to open Saturday, will showcase 359 pieces spanning crafts, ceramics and paintings, offering a glimpse into the period from the Three Kingdoms era (57 BC-668 AD) to the Joseon era (1392-1910).
The state-run National Museum of Korea has loaned 349 objects and the rest of the exhibits come from the Dresden State Art Collections (SKD), which comprises 15 museums in Germany.
Highlights include intricate jewelry pieces dating back to the Silla Kingdom (57 BC-935 AD), SKD said, adding that earrings, rings, belts and crowns from the kingdom known for gold gilt objects will add to the exhibition’s variety.
A joint exhibition of this scale last took place 25 years ago, according to the Korea Foundation, the public diplomacy arm of the Foreign Ministry. “We’ve been backing joint overseas exhibitions for the past 30 years. We will now focus on advancing not only Korean history and culture but ties in the process,” a KF official said.
