National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik will meet with Kevin McCarthy, former speaker of the US House of Representatives, later this week, Woo's office said Monday, to discuss diplomatic issues between Seoul and Washington.

The meeting, slated for Friday, comes amid the second term of US President Donald Trump, with discussions expected to focus on the importance of parliamentary diplomacy between the two allies.

Woo is also expected to stress the resilience of South Korea's democracy, despite the political turmoil triggered by the Dec. 3 martial law decree imposed by impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol.

Trade issues may also be on the agenda, as McCarthy, known for his ties to Trump, could offer insights into Washington's new tariff policies.

The meeting will also be attended by Rep. Cho Kyung-tae of the ruling People Power Party and Rep. Chung Dong-young of the main opposition Democratic Party.

Meanwhile, the National Assembly kicked off a 162-member bipartisan parliamentary organization earlier in the day to bolster the nation's alliance with the United States. (Yonhap)
