Seoul Auction aims to bring in more than a billion won at an upcoming auction in Seoul featuring Korean contemporary art, with some of the works to be shown in Hong Kong before they go under the hammer in Seoul. The auction in Seoul has been timed to coincide with Art Basel Hong Kong in an effort to attract more collectors in the Asian region.

The auction house will host the contemporary art sale in Seoul on March 28 at the Seoul Auction’s headquarters in Gangnam-gu with a total of 113 lots worth 1.05 billion won. The works will include those by Korean contemporary art masters such as Lee Ufan, Yoo Young-kuk and Park Seo-bo.

The works are currently on view at the Seoul headquarters, and some of the works will be shown from March 25 to 28 at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong located near the upcoming Art Basel Hong Kong venue at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center from March 28 to 30.

While the presentation of the works will take place in the two cities, the auction will be held in Seoul, according to the auctioneer. In Hong Kong, the preview will be accompanied by artist’s talks led by Choi Young-wook, famously known for moon jar paintings and Maria Chang whose works are characterized by the thick texture of oil paints on canvas.

“We consider both Seoul and Hong Kong markets crucial in Asia, which is why we are presenting previews in the two cities, looking to create synergy. Hong Kong is particularly important for us to meet Chinese collectors,” an official from the auction house told The Korea Herald.
