High1 Resort, owned by Kangwon Land Inc., will host "Daengdaeng Trekking 2025," South Korea's largest pet-friendly hiking event, in May.

The event, now in its fifth year, will take place along the Untangodo Trail, a scenic route that has been transformed into a popular tourism destination after the closure of local coal mines.

The event will be held over two weekends — May 17-18 and May 24-25. Participants can enjoy trekking with their dogs through the beautiful landscapes of Gowonsupgil and will also have the opportunity to take in the natural beauty of Baekdudaegan, the mountain range that stretches across the Korean Peninsula, from the Sky1340 cable car.

In addition to hiking, attendees can participate in a "book concert," to discuss books related to pets and pet care, and photo sessions with renowned dog trainer Kang Hyung-wook. The resort will also feature a "Daengdaeng Free Zone," a large grassy space where dogs can play off-leash.

A new collaboration this year with the nearby Gohan Gugongtan Market brings additional events, such as a "Daengdaeng Contest" where dogs show off their unique charms, and a photo booth event allowing participants to take instant photos with their pets.

Additionally, pet-friendly restaurants will be marked with the “Daengdaeng Blue Ribbon” designation to help visitors enjoy local cuisine with their furry friends.

High1 Resort expects approximately 10,000 pet owners and 2,000 dogs to attend the event across both weekends.

“Through Daengdaeng Trekking, we aim to establish High1 Resort as a pet-friendly destination and further activate the highland forest tourism experience linked to the Untangodo Trail. We will continue to organize various sporting events and community activities to contribute to the revitalization of the former mining region," said Choi Cheol-kyoo, interim CEO of Kangwon Land.

Tickets for the event are priced at 59,000 won ($41) per person.

Each guardian is limited to one pet during the event for safety reasons, according to the organizer. Participation without a pet is also allowed.

Though not required, it is strongly recommended that pets registering for the event have at least three rounds of vaccinations as well as a rabies vaccination.
