The South Korean government announced Monday that visitors from overseas entering the country can now submit their arrival cards three days in advance via computer or smartphone.
The previous immigration procedure required foreign visitors to manually fill out paper arrival cards at the airport and immigration officers to scan each form individually. As this process was time-consuming, the Ministry of Justice decided to implement electronic arrival cards to speed up processing at immigration desks and increase convenience for travelers.
Arrival cards are required for foreign nationals visiting South Korea for 90 days or less.
The ministry stated that both paper and online arrival cards will be accepted until the end of the year to minimize confusion in the early stages of the new system.
Visitors from overseas can complete and submit the newly-launched arrival card at the official website for e-Arrival card, www.e-arrivalcard.go.kr, three days before arrival.
An electronic arrival card will lose validity if the person submitting it does not enter South Korea within 72 hours of submitting it.
The website is available in seven languages: Korean, English, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese and Russian.
“The online arrival card is expected to allow the government to manage foreign visitors’ data more systematically. It will not only ease congestion at airports, but also support efforts to attract more foreign tourists,” the ministry said Monday.
