Artist touches on gender, identity, human rights in both virtual world and reality

Media artist TZUSOO has been selected as the inaugural artist for a collaborative project between the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea and LG Electronics that will be unveiled to the public in August.
TZUSOO’s works will be shown at the state museum’s open space, Seoul Box, from August through Feb. 1, 2026. The project, MMCA X LG OLED Series, will feature large-scale site-specific works created with technical support from LG Electronics.
TZUSOO approaches art in an unconventional way. While the artist mainly uses digital media, she also creates paintings and sculptural installations using materials such as agar and moss. Her works speak about identity, gender, human rights, relating to the virtual world as well as the real world.
“TZUSOO’s work is expected to perfectly visualize the core values of this series -- emergence and innovation,” said MMCA Director Kim Sung-hee.
For the MMCA X LG OLED Series, the museum will select an artist every year among candidates recommended by contemporary art experts. A panel of judges will select the final artist through interviews and a review of artists' presentations of their works. The project aims to introduce artists who challenge conventional discourse and show innovative works, according to the museum.
“The MMCA X LG OLED Series will mark a revolutionary leap forward, demonstrating how technology can amplify artistic expression and offer an immersive sensory experience,” said Kate Oh, vice president of Experiential Marketing at LG Media Entertainment Solution Company. The series is expected to run for five years.
Previously, MMCA Hyundai Motor Series, an annual show supported by the automaker, ran for 10 years, starting in 2014.
LG OLED has collaborated with over 30 globally established artists since 2021, including Anish Kapoor, Barry X Ball, Damien Hirst, John Akomfrah, Kevin McCoy, Kim Whan-ki and Suh Se-ok.
