
South Koreans are now spending an average of 140,000 won ($96) per month on their pets.
According to the “2024 National Consciousness Survey on Animal Welfare” released by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, the cost of raising a pet has risen to an average of 142,000 won per month, a significant increase from 16,000 won the previous year.
The cost of raising a dog was the highest, averaging 175,000 won per month. Other animals had lower costs: Cats averaged 130,000 won, birds 51,000 won, amphibians 32,100 won and tropical fish 7,000 won. Among the various expenses, veterinary costs rose from 44,000 won to 52,000 won.
The survey also found that 93 percent of pet owners visit animal hospitals at least once a year. Additionally, 75.4 percent of respondents reported being familiar with the Animal Protection Act, its name and its contents. Awareness of the Act stood at 57.1 percent in 2020 but rose to the mid-70s by last year.
