South Korea plans to submit an official bid to host the Invictus Games in 2029 as the international sports event for injured service members will kick off in Canada this weekend, the veterans ministry said Friday.
Vice Veterans Affairs Minister Lee Hee-wan will submit South Korea's formal bid Sunday as he will lead a government delegation to attend the opening ceremony for the Invictus Games 2025, set for Saturday in Vancouver.
More than 550 athletes from 23 countries, including 11 South Korean ones, will participate in the multinational sports competition for wounded, injured and sick service members for this year.
Founded by Britain's Prince Harry, the Invictus Games were first held in 2014 and have taken place as a biennial event since 2023 after being held irregularly.
During his trip, Lee plans to meet with Korean War veterans and descendants of Korean independence activists. He will also hold talks with Canadian Veterans Minister Darren Fisher to seek support for South Korea's bid.
Next week, Lee will visit Sacramento, California, to meet Lee Ha-jeon, one of the oldest surviving independence fighters, and pay tribute to independence activists buried in California. (Yonhap)
