South Korea braces for heavy snow and rain expected to impact much of the country during the extended Seollal holiday, with weather authorities predicting up to 30 centimeters of snow in some areas.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration on Monday, snowfall of 10 to 20 centimeters is forecast for the greater Seoul area, parts of Gyeonggi Province and southern regions through Wednesday.
Heavier snowfall, up to 30 centimeters, is anticipated in areas such as Gangwon Province, eastern North Jeolla Province and Jeju Island, a KMA official said.
The KMA also predicts a cold snap across the country on Tuesday, accompanied by strong winds from Monday through Wednesday in most regions. Wind speeds could reach up to 20 meters per second in coastal areas on Wednesday.
In response to heavy snowfall, the Ministry of Interior and Safety announced Monday that it has activated the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters to mitigate potential damage and implement measures to ease traffic congestion.
