The government of the Indian state of Assam urged Korean companies to take part in its semiconductor and green technology sectors at a roadshow event in Seoul on Monday.

“Assam is driving innovation and ensuring a sustainable, low-carbon economy,” the state's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma underlined in his keynote speech discussing Assam's strategic advantages, investment-friendly policies, and vision for sustainable industrial growth.

He visited South Korea to attract investors for Advantage Assam Summit 2.0, set for Feb. 25-26 in Guwahati.

“By collaborating with Korea, we aim to not only meet our environmental objectives but also create a blueprint for green industrialization that can serve as a model for the region and beyond,” he said hoping for collaboration with Assam’s focus on data management, cybersecurity and software with Korea.

According to Sarma, key policies such as the Industrial and Investment Policy of Assam and the Assam Electronics Policy have already catalyzed growth in high-tech, sustainable sectors such as electronic system design and manufacturing (ESDM) and green hydrogen.

“Assam’s unique geographical location, coupled with India’s Act East Policy offers a strategic advantage for businesses aiming to connect with Southeast Asia and beyond,” Sarma stressed.

The policy seeks to boost India's economic, cultural and strategic ties with Asia-Pacific nations, enhancing connectivity and development in Northeast India through bilateral, regional, and multilateral engagement.

India views Korea as an indispensable partner in its "Act East" strategy to promote economic, strategic and cultural relations with the Indo-Pacific region.

KK Dwivedi, commissioner and secretary to Assam’s government highlighted Assam’s natural resources, robust infrastructure, and connectivity.

“Assam is centrally located in Southeast Asia. Within a three-hour radius, businesses can access 30 percent of the global population and economy,” he said.

Dwivedi also discussed mega projects such as the $3.3 billion Tata Electronics semiconductor facility, which is set to produce 48 million chips daily by 2045.

According to the Indian government's Press Information Bureau website, the facility will develop advanced indigenous packaging technologies like Wire Bond, Flip Chip, and I-SIP, vital for EVs, communications, and network infrastructure and would create 15,000 jobs directly and 11,000–13,000 more through knock-on effects.

“Assam offers unique opportunities in sectors like electronics, EVs, chemicals, food processing, and biotechnology. Korean companies, with their advanced technology, are well-positioned to contribute meaningfully to Assam’s growth,” said Anil Sinha, COO of Tata Daewoo Mobility, praising Assam’s potential.

Meanwhile, Indian Ambassador to Korea Amit Kumar emphasized the growing Indo-Korean partnership.

“India’s economy, projected to become the third largest globally within five years, offers immense opportunities. Assam, as a new growth engine, exemplifies this potential,” he stated.

The roadshow concluded with a call by J.B. Ekka, additional chief secretary of the Assam government, for Korean businesses to leverage Assam’s resources, policies, and strategic location to drive mutual growth and innovation.
