President Yoon Suk Yeol will appear before the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials today, his lawyer said Wednesday hours after the joint probe team entered the presidential residence in an attempt to detain him.
Seok Dong-hyeon, Yoon's lawyer, made a statement on Facebook that the president has made an "unavoidable decision to appear," to prevent a physical clash between the security team and the police, and citizens being injured outside the residence.
Seok added that the president would make a statement before he leaves for the CIO.
The CIO did not confirm Seok's claim regarding whether it was accepting Yoon's voluntary appearance or continuing to execute the warrant to detain him.
It said around 9 a.m., an hour before Seol's statement was released that a CIO official told the reporters that the agency's prosecutors were coordinating the execution of the warrant and that Yoon’s voluntary appearance was not being considered.
During the second attempt, there were no personnel actively obstructing the process, and no physical confrontation occurred, unlike in the previous case, he added.
