Dabeeo, a geospatial information AI technology company, announced Monday that it has been selected to lead the development of a microsatellite utilization system, aimed at bolstering South Korea’s maritime security and disaster response capabilities.
The KSIS Data-Based Microsatellite Utilization System project, commissioned by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute’s National Satellite Information Utilization Support Center, will be conducted in partnership with defense company LIG Nex1. Officially launched this month, the initiative is set to run through 2030.
The system will analyze synthetic aperture radar images and automatic identification system data collected by the National Satellite Operations Center to assist the Korea Coast Guard in monitoring maritime activities, according to Dabeeo.
SAR technology uses radar signals to create detailed images of objects regardless of weather or time of the day, while AIS collects ship identification and movement data, providing a comprehensive view of maritime activity. Through these tools, the system aims to improve ship detection and monitoring, enabling faster and more accurate responses to security threats.
Dabeeo said it will oversee the design and development of the system, focusing on improving deep learning algorithm-based technology for object detection and classification. This technology will be applied to SAR satellite data to identify and classify ships, ensuring accurate and reliable analysis.
With expertise in AI-driven geospatial analysis, Dabeeo has applied its core technologies -- such as image super-resolution, object detection, 3D reconstruction and change detection -- to various global projects. These range from urban planning and illegal construction monitoring to forest and crop management and the development of surveillance and reconnaissance monitoring systems.
“This project represents a significant milestone for Dabeeo as we expand our capabilities in the defense sector,” Dabeeo CEO Park Ju-hum said, emphasizing that the project aligns with its broader mission to tackle national security challenges and disaster situations through AI-powered solutions.
“We are honored to contribute to Korea’s maritime security and will focus on advancing this vital technology.”
