If self-defense techniques need to be used, in any circumstance, people usually instinctively try to evade or protect themselves from attacks.
However, there are some situations where you will need to grab hold of an opponent so that he does not flee the scene. For example, you want to keep a suspect until the police arrive. This column describes how to keep hold of an opponent when necessary.
1. The picture shows an attempt to overthrow an opponent by grabbing the opponent’s clothes and then hooking a leg onto his leg from the outside. As you push the opponent’s body backwards and make the opponent lose balance, he will fall to the ground on his back.
2. Hold down the opponent by the arms as shown in the picture and then take an arm between your legs.
3. Grab the opponent’s wrist tightly while clamping your legs around the same arm. The leg closest to the opponent’s neck should hold the neck down while the other leg presses down on the chest.
You can use your hands to pull and press the restrained arm to prevent the opponent from getting up. Also squeeze your legs around the restrained arm while putting your whole body weight onto your legs to push the opponent’s body down. This will keep the opponent down until help arrives.
The key point here is to take this position as swiftly as possible to eliminate any chances for the opponent to regain balance.
