This column deals with defending yourself when someone attacks you from behind with a gun. We all hope this won’t happen to us, but better to be prepared than sorry later.

1. The first picture shows a situation where the opponent is threatening a woman by holding up a gun behind her.

2. The first step is to move quickly away from the firing line of the gun. This is to minimize any injuries or damage when the gun or knife is used.

Quickly move to the side while turning to face the opponent and the stretched-out hand holding the weapon, as shown in the picture. In this case, the defender moved her left foot to swiftly change direction to face the attacker. Picture 2 shows the female rotating her body, where her left foot is pivoted to turn 180 degrees. Make sure that you move away from the firing line while you rotate your body.

3. Almost at the same time of the direction switch, use the palm of your hand or your fist to push away or grab the opponent’s hand holding up the weapon. The key point in this technique is to slide, turn and hit almost at the same time in one swift movement. The closer you are to the opponent, the safer you are from being injured by the weapon.

Also, using your knee, elbow, and head to hit the opponent is effective in close range. After blocking or grabbing the hand holding the weapon, hit the opponent to make the opponent drop the weapon or attempt to steal it away.
