South Korean footballer Park Chu-young will put off mandatory military service, possibly for 10 years, his lawyer said Friday.

Park’s temporary exemption from service was enabled by his three year stay at French club AS Monaco.
According to Korean law, a citizen can extend the period of staying outside the country until age 37 if he has earned the right to stay in country that has no green card system for more than five years and has lived there for more than one year.
“The Monacan king has granted Park the right to stay in the country for 10 years, enabling Park to put off military service until Dec. 31, 2022,” said Park’s lawyer Lee Sung-hui.
The 27-year-old forward, who currently plays for Arsenal in the English Premier League, said he has no plans to dodge his service, and will fulfill his duties after his playing career overseas has ended.
South Korea requires all able-bodied men to serve in the military for at least 21 months.

박주영, 군대 10년 뒤에 가도 된다 잉글랜드 프로축구 아스널에서 뛰는 박주영(27)이 병역이행을 미루기로 한 것으로 밝혀졌다.
박주영 측은 16일 AS모나코 선수 시절 얻은 모나코 10년 체류자 자격으로 지난해 8월 병무청으로부터 병역 연기에 대한 허가를 받았다고 밝혔다.
현행 병역법은 병역의무를 이행하지 않은 대상자의 해외 체류를 제한하고 있다.
그러나 영주권 제도가 없는 국가에서 5년 이상 체류 자격을 얻어 해당 국가에서 1년 이상 거주하면 37세까지 국외여행 기간을 연장할 수 있도록 하고 있다.
박주영은 2008년부터 지난해까지 3년간 AS모나코에서 뛰면서 영주권 제도가 없는 모나코로부터 10년 체류 자격을 획득했다.
그동안 이적설이 돌 때마다 유럽 빅클럽들은 박주영의 병역 문제를 들어 영입에 난색을 표명했었다.
지난해 8월 프랑스 릴SOC로의 이적협상이 이뤄질 때도 병역문제 때문에 당시 소속팀인 AS모나코와 릴SOC 간의 견해차가 좁혀지지 않아 협상이 무산됐다.
박주영 측은 지난해 7월에야 모나코 장기 체류자 자격으로 병역을 미룰 수 있음을 알고 병무청에 연기신청을 해 허가를 받았다고 전했다.
그러나 아스널과 AS모나코 사이의 계약이 끝날 때까지 이 사실을 비공개하기로 해 언론에 알리지 않았던 것이라고 덧붙였다.
박주영 측은 박주영이 해외에서 선수 생활을 마치고 국내로 돌아오면 병역의무를 이행할 것이라고 밝혔다. (연합뉴스)
