Sixteen volleyball players and two baseballers in have been indicted for alleged involvement in match-fixing in the latest blow to the country's professional sports leagues.
The volleyball and baseball players allegedly attempted to fix the results of games in return for taking bribes from gambling brokers, a prosecution office in the southeastern city of Daegu said in a statement Wednesday.
Prosecutors indicted 13 other people who allegedly financed or offered the bribes before betting on illegal gambling sites, the statement said.
The volleyball players are suspected of deliberately making mistakes when they received, tossed and spiked balls while the baseball pitchers allegedly intentionally allowed walks in the first innings.
The players, who have already been suspended or received lifetime bans, took up to 5 million won ($4,450) for each game, according to the prosecution statement. A total of 23 volleyball and baseball games in 2010 and 2011 were fixed, it said.
Six of the indicated volleyballers are former or current players for the KEPCO45 team, while four others are currently with the military club Sangmu. Two female players from Heungkuk Life Pink Spiders were also among those indicted.
The two baseballers are contracted to the LG Twins based in Seoul.
South Korea is still reeling from a massive match-fixing scandal that engulfed the domestic football league last year. Nearly 80 people have been indicted over the scandal and a former K-League player who was allegedly involved as a gambling broker was found dead in an apparent suicide.
Government officials subsequently threatened to shut down the K-league _ Asia's oldest professional football league _ if any more games are fixed.
Prosecutors have pinpointed illegal online gambling sites as the root for widespread match-fixing in professional sports in South Korea.
Compared with the country's licensed sports lottery that limits the maximum personal bets to 100,000 won ($89), illegal online gambling Web sites allow people to bet as much as 1 million won ($890), the statement said.
It's inexpensive and quick to establish gambling sites which are mostly based overseas to avoid investigation. Investigators said one of the people indicted only spent 8 million won ($7,100) to launch such a site, which typically take about three weeks to establish.
South Korea is one of the most wired countries in the world and its citizens are some of the most Internet-savvy. South Korea has a population of about 50 million people and more than 80 percent of households have broadband access to the Internet, according to the country's statistical office last year. 프로스포츠 승부조작 15명 구속•16명 불구속기소
대구지검, 프로스포츠 승부조작 수사 결과 발표
대구지검 강력부(조호경 부장검사)는 프로스포츠 승부조작과 관련한 혐의(국민체육진흥법 위반)로 모두 31명을 국민체육진흥법 위 반으로 적발해 11명을 구속기소하고 16명을 불구속기소했다고 14일 밝혔다.
검찰은 또 승부조작에 가담한 국군체육부대 소속 배구선수 최모(28)씨 등 4명의 범죄사실에 대해서는 국방부 검찰단에 통보했고, 군 검찰은 이들을 구속기소했다.
기소된 프로배구 선수 가운데 전직 KEPCO 선수 염모(30)씨 등 3명은 구속기소됐고, 현직 KEPCO 선수 박준범 등 7명과 여자 프로배구 흥국생명 소속 선수 2명은 불구속기소됐다.
남자 프로배구에서는 2009-2010시즌과 2010-2011시즌 2차례에 걸쳐 모두 14명의 선수가 개입해 17경기를 조작했고, 여자배구는 2010-2011 시즌에 1차례 경기가 조작 된 것으로 드러났다.
승부조작에 가담한 선수들은 심판이나 관객 등이 승부조작을 눈치 채지 못하게 의도적으로 불안정하게 리시브나 토스를 하거나 엉뚱한 방향으로 스파이크하는 수법으로 경기를 조작했다.
선수들을 경기조작에 끌어들인 브로커들은 배구의 경우 승률이 떨어지는 팀이 일정점수 이상으로 패했을 때 배당금을 지급하는 배당방식을 활용해 선수들에게 필요한 점수 이상의 차이로 소속팀이 패하도록 주문한 것으로 전해졌다.
프로야구에서 구속기소된 LG 트윈스 투수 김성현은 모두 3차례의 경기를 조작해 700만원을 받아챙겼고, 같은 팀 박성현은 2차례에 걸쳐 경기조작에 가담해 500만원을 받았다.
이들은 배구와 달리 야구에서는 승부 전체를 조작하기 어려운 점을 감안해 몸이 풀리지 않은 듯 첫 이닝 볼넷을 던지는 수법으로 경기를 조작했던 것으로 드러났다.
박은석 대구지검 2차장 검사는 "이번 수사를 통해 소문으로 떠돌던 프로배구와 야구의 승부ㆍ경기조작 사실이 최초로 적발됐다"며 "수사를 통해 심각한 수준에 이른 프로스포츠 선수들의 도덕적 해이에 경각심을 일깨우는 계기가 마련됐을 것으로 본다"고 말했다. (연합뉴스)
