Former NBA player Allen Iverson has been offered a chance to play for an American indoor soccer team, Los Angeles Times reported Monday.

The Rochester Lancers of the Major Indoor Soccer League said they offered Iverson a contract to play for the remaining two games of the season. It also offered to pay expenses for his family and friends during his stay.
Should Iverson accept the contract, he will be paid $20,000 per game, a $5,000 bonus per goals scored and win bonuses and merchandise bonuses.
Rich Randall, the Lancers’ vice president, called Iverson “one of the premier athletes of our time” and said that athleticism and competitive nature could help the team’s push for the playoffs.
However, some are speculating that it is nothing more than a publicity stunt to benefit from Iverson’s popularity, since Iverson is never known to have played organized soccer.
The former NBA superstar’s unlikely move may be because of his financial problems. It was recently reported that Georgia judge ordered his bank account to be seized after he failed to pay a jeweler $850,000.

전직 NBA선수가 한번도 전문적으로 해보지 않은 축구선수로 뛸지도 모른다고 미국 로스앤젤레스 타임즈가 20일 (현지시간) 보도했다.
미국 실내 축구 리그 (Major Indoor Soccer League) 소속 로체스터 랜서는 아이버슨에게 경기당 2만달러를 지불하고, 골을 넣을 때마다 5천달러, 추가로 승리 수당과 캐릭터 상품 수익을 나눠주는 계약을 제시했다고 밝혔다.
랜서의 부사장 리치 랜덜은 아이버슨이 “우리 시대 최고의 운동선수 중 한 명”이며 그의 승부욕과 운동능력이 랜서의 플레이오프 진출을 도울 수 있을 것이라고 말했다.
그러나 이 계약이 아이버슨의 인기를 등에 업기 위한 “쇼”가 아니냐는 일각의 시선도 존재한다.
랜서가 이번 시즌 치를 경기가 두 경기밖에 남지 않은데다, 아이버슨은 한번도 조직적인 축구를 경험해본 적이 없기 때문이다.
NBA에서 최우수선수상 (MVP)까지 수상한 아이버슨이 난데없이 축구선수 계약제의를 받은 배경에는 그가 최근 보석상에게 돈을 지불 못해서 은행계좌를 압류당하는 등 금전적 문제가 크게 작용한 것으로 보인다.
