SEATTLE (AP) _ Three people are dead and as many as eight missing after an avalanche Sunday near a popular ski resort in Washington state, authorities said.

The King County Sheriff's Office began receiving word about the slide near the Stevens Pass ski area just after noon, Sgt. Cindi West said. Stevens Pass is in the Cascade Mountains northeast of Seattle.
West initially said two people had died but later confirmed there were three deaths.
The deaths occurred in an out-of-bounds area near the resort, she said. Search and rescue crews and other emergency responders were at the scene.
The Northwest Weather and Avalanche Center on Sunday issued a warning for high avalanche danger for areas above 5,000 feet (1,500 meters), saying warmer weather could loosen surface snow and trigger a slide on steeper slopes. The elevation of the avalanche wasn't immediately clear.
At mid-afternoon, the temperate at the base of the ski resort was 24 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 4 Celsius), with light winds and good visibility. The temperature at the top of the mountain was 22 degrees F (minus 6 C), according to the resort's website.
The site also said Sunday was a ``popular powder day'' at the resort, with 14 inches (36 centimeters) of fresh snow falling overnight.
Stevens Pass, an 80-mile (130-kilometer) drive from Seattle, is one of the most popular outdoor recreation areas in the state. People flock there to go cross-country, back-country and downhill skiing, as well as snowshoeing and backpacking.
It's been a deadly winter in Washington state's mountains. Four people disappeared in vicious storms while hiking and climbing on Mount Rainier last month.
Across the West, there had been 13 avalanche deaths this season as of Feb. 16, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, which tracks avalanche deaths in the U.S.
Avalanche deaths are more common in the backcountry than at ski resorts. Out of about 900 avalanche deaths nationwide since the 1950-1951 winter, 32 were within terrain that was open for riding at ski resorts, according to the Utah Avalanche Center.
Also Sunday, West said a snowboarder was killed in a separate incident at the Alpental ski area east of Seattle. The snowboarder went over a cliff. No other details were available.

앞서 미 북서부지역 기상 및 눈사태 관측소는 "19일 따뜻한 날씨가 눈 표면을 녹여 가파른 경사지에 눈사태를 초래할 수 있다"며 눈사태 경보를 발동했었다.
스키장측은 이날 웹사이트를 통해 "사고가 난 19일 오후 스키장이 위치한 산기 슭과 산꼭대기 기온은 그렇게 낮지 않았고 약한 바람이 불긴 했지만 가시성은 좋았 다"며 "밤사이 스키장에 14인치의 눈이 내린 정도였다"고 설명했다.
유타주 산사태 센터에 따르면 미국내 눈사태로 인한 사망은 스키장에서보다는 시골에서 주로 발생하며 지난 1950-1951년 겨울 이래 미 전역에서 눈사태로 인한 사 망자 900명 중 32명이 스키를 탈 수 있도록 개방된 지역에서 사고를 당했다.
웨스트는 "같은 날 이 사고와는 별개로 시애틀 동부의 알펜탈 스키장에서도 스 노우보딩을 즐기던 관광객 1명이 벼랑을 넘어가다 숨졌다"고 밝혔다. 워싱턴주에서 는 지난달에도 레이니어산 등산객 4명이 극심한 태풍 속에서 실종됐었다.
