The organizing committee for the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics will hold its first workshop, bringing together all members to start working on plans for a successful Olympics, officials said Wednesday.
In a press release, the committee said the workshop will be held from Thursday to Friday at the Yongpyong and Alpensia resorts in Gangwon Province, east of Seoul. The areas will serve as the key venues for the 2018 Winter Games.
The organizing committee was formed in October last year, about three months after PyeongChang, an alpine town nestled among east coast mountains, won the right to host the 2018 Olympics. The committee is made up of government officials, Gangwon provincial public servants and other civilian employees. It is headed by Kim Jin-sun, former Gangwon governor.
The committee said the two-day meeting is designed to promote unity among members from different fields, and they will also begin preliminary work on formulating the Olympic master plan. They will also tour Olympic venues and facilities, the committee added.
“We will look to finalize our master plan within the year and get the International Olympic Committee’s approval,” the committee said. “We will try to set up a well-organized cooperative network among the government, Gangwon Province and the Korean Olympic Committee to ensure a successful Olympics in 2018.”
PyeongChang edged out Germany’s Munich and France’s Annecy in an IOC vote in July to become the first South Korean host of the Winter Olympics. It was PyeongChang’s third straight bid.
