One out of three Koreans are likely to be diagnosed with cancer once in their lifetime mainly due to changes in diet and increased longevity the National Cancer Center said Thursday.

According to its annual report on cancer, 192,561 people were newly registered as cancer patients in 2009, up about 90.6 percent from 101,032 in 1999. The growth of cancer prevalence was greater among women, marking annual growth rate of 5.5 percent, much higher than 1.6 percent for males.

The total number of people who have or have recovered from cancer stood at 808,503, as of January 2010. This means that if a person lives up to the full average life expectancy of 81 years, 36.2 percent will be stricken by cancer once in their lifetime, the center said.

The lion’s share for males went to gastric cancer, followed by colorectal cancer, lung cancer, liver cancer and prostatic cancer in that order, while thyroid cancer topped the list among women followed by breast cancer, colorectal cancer, gastric cancer and lung cancer.

The prevalence of lung and liver cancers were in decline among males and the number of female patients with thyroid, breast and colon cancers decreased.

“No evident reason for the cancer prevalence has been verified yet but many suspect aging to be closely related to the disease because of the aging of cell and other factors,” Lee Jin-soo, head of the NCC, told reporters at the Ministry of Health and Welfare.

“The development of diagnosis devices for cancer ― for instance, soaring cases of thyroid cancer diagnosis owes much to ever-developing sonograph devices ― has also contributed to the growing number of cancer cases. But most of all, the change in the meal table seems to have triggered such a large prevalence,” he said.

For example, the number of women suffering from colorectal cancer, which is believed to be to linked high-fat low-fiber diet such as meat, fried or processed foods, has outnumbered that of gastric cancer since 2009 and the number of male patients is also on a steady rise.

But the NCC noted that cancer is becoming more “conquerable.”

Korean patients showed a 62 percent chance of living for more than five years after the diagnosis and treatment. Experts and administrators said high-end techniques have contributed to the success.

The government has implemented five-year cancer-management programs since 2000. It provides free cancer checkup service for people over 40 years old and consulting service on cancer prevention for others.

“We still have more to go. Since cancer is the No.1 reason of death, the government needs to step up efforts to curb the prevalence while bringing up the survival rate,” Lee said.
