"Light Shop," a series Disney+ hopes can compete with Netflix's "Squid Game 2" during the holiday season, is poised to live up to that expectation.

According to Kinolights, "Light Shop" ranked second among the most-watched Korean original content on Disney+ as of Monday, just twelve days after its launch. The action-fantasy series "Moving" had the No. 1 spot.

"Light Shop" was scripted by Kang Full, the renowned cartoonist who wrote the "Moving" series. Kang not only crafted the original webtoons for both series, but was also the scriptwriter for the TV adaptations.

Kang, whose works now hold the top two spots on Disney+, expressed his satisfaction with their success during a group interview in Seoul's Samcheong-dong on Tuesday.

“I’m very happy. (I was worried), because the story of 'Light Shop' is told in a somewhat unfamiliar way," he remarked.

"Light Shop" follows several mysterious figures who visit a light shop in a dark alley. These visitors are peculiar in different ways -- some with nails on the backs of their hands, others constantly shedding dirt from their ears. Strangely, none of them sees what's wrong with them. The series, initially unclear about the nature of these visitors, takes a shocking turn as their true identities are revealed in later episodes.

"It felt like the real story began only after carefully exploring each character in the early episodes. I was worried because viewers needed to follow closely from episodes 1 to 4 to truly enjoy it," Kang said. "It was a risky approach, but it was a story I wanted to tell. I’m so relieved and grateful that viewers followed along and that it produced good results," he added.

"Moving" and "Light Shop" share a universe whose characters overlap. When asked about the possibility of expanding the "Kang Full Universe" of his hit webtoons and TV series, the cartoonist was noncommittal.

“I am currently working on 'Moving 2,' but I’m not sure how far (I) will go,” Kang said. "Still, I have to have some sort of outline in mind."

“Just as no one expected 'Light Shop' to follow 'Moving,' I want (the next work) after 'Moving 2' to be unpredictable. I’m over 50 now, so I can’t keep doing this for too long. Still, I’d like to stay immersed in this universe and continue working on it,” he added.

Ju Ji-hoon, who rose to stardom playing Lee Shin in the MBC hit drama "Princess Hours" and starring in Netflix’s "Kingdom" series, returns to "Light Shop" as Won-young, the enigmatic owner of the shop who becomes entangled with the visitors seeking light.

According to Ju, his character represents either the perspective of the director or the audience. By observing people with diverse stories entering the shop for different reasons, Ju said he felt that Won-young conveyed the message that, although some people may appear strange at first, we should take the time to understand them.

"I think 'Light Shop' is a work where the message is the most important element," Ju said during a Samcheong-dong interview Friday.

"We tend to judge others based solely on first impressions, don’t we? Things like, 'That person seems like he’d get along with me' or 'She wouldn’t.' We’ve all heard comments like that," Ju said.

"If we take a step back and think, ‘Well, they must have their reasons,' and observe them with that mindset, we come to see that everyone has their own story. And as we understand their reasons, they start to make sense," he explained, adding that "Light Shop" seeks to deliver this message to its audience.

"Our work gives each individual their own story, with no concept of supporting characters. I truly think Kang is an absolute genius," Ju said.
