“Steel Rain,” a new North Korean-themed action blockbuster, took the No. 1 spot at the South Korean box office on its opening weekend, data showed on Monday.

The movie, starring Jung Woo-sung and Kwak Do-won, sold 1.09 million tickets across the country from Saturday to Sunday, accounting for 54.9 percent of all tickets sold over the weekend, the Korean Film Council said. The film’s accumulated audience has reached 1.62 million since opening last Thursday.

In “Steel Rain,” Jung plays a North Korean agent on a covert mission to eliminate military leaders plotting a coup. He witnesses an assassination attempt on North’s “No. 1,” which leaves the Korean Peninsula on the brink of a nuclear war. The film was written and directed by Yang Woo-seok, who helmed the 2015 hit courtroom drama “The Attorney.”

Anticipated Hollywood heavyweight “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” which also opened last week, came in at second place, selling 415,313 tickets. The Rian Johnson-directed space adventure film, the second in the newest “Star Wars” trilogy, has sold a combined 638,998 tickets so far.

Seasonal kids animation film also ended in the top tier, with “Pororo, Dinosaur Island Adventure” finishing third with 164,011 tickets and “Mary and The Witch’s Flower” drawing in 81,327 moviegoers.

Mystery thriller “Forgotten” fell two notches from last week to fifth, while “The Swindlers,” which reigned over the box office for the past three weeks, plummeted to sixth place. (Yonhap)
