An opposition lawmaker was sentenced to a suspended prison term Friday for political fund violations, a verdict heavy enough to cost him his National Assembly seat if it's finalized at the Supreme Court.

Rep. Lee Koon-hyon of the main opposition Liberty Korea Party was indicted in two separate cases of political fund law violations. One of them involves allegations that he got back some of the salary paid to his aides and used the money to pay unregistered aides and fund office expenses.

The other case is about Lee's acceptance of 15 million won ($13,484) in illegal political donations.

On Friday, the Seoul Southern District Court sentenced Lee to one year and a half in prison in one case and six months in prison in the other case, and suspended both sentences for three years.

Should the sentence be finalized at the Supreme Court, Lee will lose his National Assembly seat. By law, legislators are stripped of parliamentary seats if they are convicted of political funds or election law violations and receive a 1 million won ($885) fine or heavier sentence. (Yonhap)
