Revenue from medical tourism in South Korea reached $349 million in 2014, down 6.5 percent from $379 million the previous year, according to the Bank of Korea.

This was the first decline in medical tourism revenue since the Bank of Korea began keeping records in 2006.

Health tourism is a key industry that the government is seeking to revitalize, and had been rising since 2011.

Experts forecast that the country’s medical tourism sector, which had been growing in part due to the Korean Wave, is likely to face a slowdown.

However, the Korea Health Industry Development Institute said the number of foreign patients rose to 250,000 last year, 40,000 more than the previous year.

Some analysts suggested that Korea should also count patients’ recreational spending during medical treatment visits as part of its revenue.
