South Korea’s top automaker Hyundai Motor Co. and its affiliate Kia Motors Corp. said Thursday that three of their models have been named the best cars of the year in their categories in Canada.

Hyundai’s Sonata mid-size sedan was named best family car over $30,000, and the Genesis premium sedan best luxury car over $50,000 by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada, the company said in a press release. Kia, the country’s No. 2 carmaker, took home best city car for its Soul EV.

The AJAC picks winners in 15 different categories each year, from which the overall Canadian Car of the Year winner will be decided later in February during the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto.

Hyundai has won three Canadian Car of the Year awards in recent years, with the Santa Fe winning the most recent 2013 Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year award. The Hyundai Genesis luxury sedan and its Avante compact car were named Car of the Year in 2009 and 2012, respectively. (Yonhap)
