Many fun, unique words are popping up almost every day, reflecting the trend of people’s use of language. 

One of such phrases in the United States is “D’oh,” a classic exclamation from “The Simpsons.” The immense popularity of the sitcom even led the expression to be listed in the Oxford English Dictionary in 2002. 

In Korea, there are also a number of newly coined words that are widely used by all age groups. The following are some of the most popularly used terms:

1. Gomunkwan: Gomunkwan, or advisory councilor in English, is a word used to make fun of people who are slow at work and thus bring down the productivity of the whole group. 

The word was first coined in the 1940s after Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule. Back then, U.S. advisory councilors were dispatched to Korea to rule the nation’s army. As they were not well informed of circumstances in Korea, they had given out orders that were a far cry from reality, resulting in a fall in productivity. Today, the word is often used by army soldiers or company workers. 

2. ~ hagnyon ~ ban: “hagnyon” is grade and “ban” is class in Korean. Middle-aged people use the terms to tell their age. For example, a 63-year-old woman would tell others that she “attends yuk (six) hagnyon sam (three) ban.” Elders usually use this term if they are sheepish about revealing their age.

3. Sikhoottaeng: Sikhoottaeng is something people enjoy to eat or smoke after having a meal. “Sikhoo” means after a meal and “ttaeng” is a chime sound which signals the end of a certain event. People usually smoke cigarettes, drink coffee or eat ice cream as their sikhoottaeng.

‘고문관’ ‘식후땡’ 신조어의 유래는?

시간이 흐르면서 신조어가 속속들이 생겨나고 있다. 미 유명 시트콤 심슨의 주인공 호머 심슨의 유명한 캐치프레이즈인 ‘D’oh!“는 2002년 옥스퍼드 영어사전에 추가된 바 있다. 한국에도 시대성을 반영한 재미있는 문장이 많다.

고문관: 미군정 시절 미군으로부터 군사지원을 받게 되면서 미국측의 군사 고문관 파견 이후 생겨난 말이다. 미국 고문관들은 당시 한국군의 실정을 알지 못해 부적절한 지시를 내렸고 이는 생산성을 떨어뜨리게 되었다. 일처리가 늦고 도움이 되지 않는 사람을 군대 혹은 회사에서 “고문관” 이라고 부르게 되었다. 

“~학년 ~반”: 중장년층이 자신의 나이를 있는 그대로 밝히기 싫어 귀엽게 표현할 때 쓰는 신조어다. 예를 들어 63세의 할머니는 “6학년 3반에 다니고 있다” 라고 표현하는 것이다. 자신의 나이를 밝히기 부끄러울 때 자주 쓰는 방법이다. 

식후땡: 식사가 끝난 다음을 뜻하는 식후와 땡이라는 의성어가 합쳐져 새롭게 만들어진 단어다. 흔히 점심 혹은 저녁을 먹은 후 담배를 피거나 커피를 마시고 아이스크림을 먹는 등의 행위가 식후땡이라고 볼 수 있다.

신조어는 그 언어를 쓰는 집단 사이의 소속감을 불러일으키는 등 순기능이 널리 쓰이고 있다. 하지만 무분별한 신조어 남용은 국어의 파괴를 가지고 올 수 있어 주의가 요구된다. 국립국어원은 공식 트위터 계정을 통해 오.남용되고 있는 신조어 및 외래어를 순화하고 있다. (박수희 인턴기자 / 코리아헤럴드)
