A 33-year-old local man who tried to sexually assault a friend of his new wife on his wedding day has been arrested, police said Monday.

According to Seoul Gangbuk Police, the suspect lured the unidentified victim by offering her a ride after the ceremony. He took the victim to an amusement park in Gyeonggi Province and tried to rape her in the car, police said.

The victim offered to go to a motel in a bid to buy time, and she finally managed to escape.

Investigations found that the suspect was a convicted criminal.

The suspect accepted the charges and said he “made a mistake because he was too drunk,” according to police.

서울 강북경찰서는 결혼식 날 신부의 친구를 성폭행하려 한 혐의(강간미수)로 신랑 A(33)씨를 구속했다고 26일 밝혔다.

경찰에 따르면 A씨는 지난 11일 오후 10시께 결혼식 하객으로 참석한 신부의 친구 B(여)씨를 경기도의 한 유원지로 데려가 성폭행하려고 한 혐의를 받고 있다.

A씨는 결혼식 피로연이 끝나고 신부의 권유로 신혼방 구경까지 한 B씨에게  "비가 오는데 택시 타는 곳까지 태워주겠다"며 승용차로 으슥한 산기슭으로 데리고 간 것으로 조사됐다.

B씨는 저항에도 불구하고 A씨가 차 안에서 막무가내로 달려들자 기지를 발휘해 "이럴 바엔 모텔로 가자"고 해 시간을 번 뒤 모텔에서는 "우선 씻자"며 A씨의 경계를 풀고 가까스로 탈출했다고 경찰은 전했다.

경찰 조사결과 A씨는 폭력과 마약 등 전과 25범인 것으로 드러났다.

A씨는 경찰에서 혐의 사실을 부인하다 경찰이 정황 증거를 들이대자 술이 과해 실수했다며 범행을 시인한 것으로 전해졌다.

경찰 관계자는 "아무리 술이 과해도 결혼식 날 이런 짓을 하다니 이해가 안 간다"며 혀를 찼다.
