K-pop star Se7en is gearing up to take on the theatre world as it was announced Wednesday that the singer will be playing the role of “death” in the upcoming local musical production of “Elisabeth” in June.
The upcoming production will not only mark Se7en first return to the public limelight after his military discharge last December, but also marks his first entertainment endeavor after parting ways with his long-time agency YG Entertainment ― where the singer made his debut in 2003 ― earlier this year.
Add to that, the upcoming production will also be the singer’s first time starring in a musical.
The role of “death” or “der tod” will be a massive undertaking for Se7en, not only as his first musical performance, but because he also has the added burden of having to fill the shoes of mega hallyu star Kim Jun-su of JYJ, who was previously cast in the role of “death” during the show’s 2012-2013 run.
Kim is widely credited with putting the musical on the local map as his performance was widely praised by musical critics who referred to him as one of the few idol stars that lived up to the standards of live performance art.
Elisabeth tells the tale of an Austrian empress and her growing obsession with death as her life progresses. Se7en’s first performance is slated to be held at the Blue Square in Hannam-dong, Seoul on June 13.
