South Korean home appliance maker Coway has added sleep-tracking technology to its BEREX smart mattresses, expanding a lineup designed to accommodate different sleeping positions and firmness preferences.

The move comes amid growing attention to sleep quality in Korea, where people sleep an average of six hours and 58 minutes a night, among the shortest durations in OECD countries, according to the Korean Sleep Research Society's 2024 survey.

Coway said mattress firmness plays a key role in sleep comfort. Overly soft surfaces can cause the hips to sink, while excessively firm ones may put pressure on the back and hips.

For back sleepers, the BEREX Modi Mattress features individually pocketed springs made with high-strength Posco steel wire to support the lower back and minimize motion transfer. A seven-zone foam topper helps distribute body pressure.

The softer BEREX Signature Fireshield Mattress targets side sleepers, combining dual-support springs and micro pocket springs to cushion the shoulders and hips. It also uses nylon fastening pins instead of adhesives to hold internal materials together.

For adjustable comfort, the BEREX Smart Mattress S8+ and S6+ use built-in Sleep Cells and electronic controls to customize firmness. Larger models allow couples to adjust each side independently.

Coway recently introduced BEREX Sleep Sync to both smart models. The technology tracks breathing movements and heart rate without wearable devices, analyzes sleep patterns and provides personalized recommendations.

The company ranked first in the bed category of the 2026 Korean Customer Satisfaction Index for the sixth consecutive year and topped the mattress category of the 2026 National Customer Satisfaction Index.

"Finding a mattress that fits the body's contours is the first step toward better sleep, as everyone has different body types and sleeping habits," a Coway official said. "We will continue to offer solutions tailored to customers' sleep needs through our technology and product range."
