Debate grows over elementary sex education textbook highlighting gender diversity

Social media is abuzz with debate over a sex education textbook for elementary school students that advocates the distinction between sex and gender.
초등학생 대상 성교육 교재가 성(sex)과 젠더(gender)의 구분을 주장하면서, 온라인상에서 논쟁이 뜨겁게 일고 있다.
A passage from the textbook, shared by Rep. Kim Jae-sub of the main opposition People Power Party on his Instagram account, reads: “Sex has multiple meanings. There is biological sex, which distinguishes males and females based on reproductive organs and physical differences, and social gender, which refers to criteria based on social and cultural factors.”
국민의힘 김재섭 의원이 자신의 인스타그램에 공유한 해당 교재 일부에는 “성은 여러 의미를 가진다. 생식기관과 신체적 차이를 기준으로 남성과 여성을 구분하는 생물학적 성이 있고, 사회·문화적 요소를 기준으로 하는 사회적 젠더가 있다”고 적혀 있다.
The book uses the Korean word "seong" to refer to both sex and gender.
이 교재는 ‘성’이라는 단어를 생물학적 성과 사회적 젠더를 모두 지칭하는 데 사용하고 있다.
The textbook further notes that “feelings and thoughts related to (one's) sex are influenced by one’s knowledge about life, personal values and beliefs, desires, and surrounding environments such as family and friends. It is important to understand the various aspects of sex (gender) rather than simply categorizing it."
교재는 또 “자신의 성과 관련된 감정과 생각은 삶에 대한 지식, 개인의 가치관과 신념, 욕구, 가족과 친구 등 주변 환경의 영향을 받는다”며 “단순히 구분하기보다 성(젠더)의 다양한 측면을 이해하는 것이 중요하다”고 설명한다.
The conservative lawmaker argued that sex is divided into male and female and was not a matter of "choice."
해당 보수 성향 의원은 성은 남성과 여성으로 구분되는 것이며 선택의 문제가 아니라고 주장했다.
“This is not the role of education. Such content confuses children and undermines established systems,” he wrote.
그는 “이는 교육의 역할이 아니다. 이러한 내용은 아이들을 혼란스럽게 하고 기존 질서를 훼손한다”고 밝혔다.
Famous rapper BewhY, who is known to be a devout Protestant Christian, also voiced strong criticism of the textbook.
독실한 개신교 신자로 알려진 래퍼 비와이도 해당 교재에 대해 강하게 비판했다.
“Are they in their right mind? Is it illegal for educators to be educated?” he wrote, citing Genesis 1:27, which states, "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them."
그는 “정신이 제대로 된 건가. 교육자가 배우는 것이 불법인가”라며 창세기 1장 27절 “하나님이 자기 형상대로 사람을 창조하시되 남자와 여자를 창조하시고”를 인용했다.
Some advocates, on the other hand, say it is inevitable for young children to learn about different definitions of sex and gender.
반면 일부 옹호 측은 어린 학생들이 다양한 성과 젠더 개념을 배우는 것은 불가피하다고 주장한다.
“Even if distinguishing between men and women is necessary, as more diverse identities such as homosexual and transgender people emerge, kids need to learn about these social and cultural shifts. It’s not brainwashing. Is simply introducing the idea really a problem?” one user wrote on Facebook.
한 이용자는 페이스북에서 “남녀 구분이 필요하더라도 동성애자와 트랜스젠더 등 다양한 정체성이 등장하는 만큼, 아이들은 이러한 사회·문화적 변화를 배워야 한다”며 “이는 세뇌가 아니라 단순한 소개일 뿐인데 무엇이 문제인가”라고 말했다.
