With summer coming to a close, Jeju City will officially shut down its eight beaches on Sunday.
Still, the city announced it will station 74 safety personnel at the beaches and nearby coastal areas through Sept. 15, anticipating continued hot weather and large numbers of visitors even after the official closure.
According to Korea’s traditional seasonal calendar, summer heat in Korea begins to ease starting with Cheoseo, the seasonal division that falls around Aug. 23 (the 7th month of the lunar calendar).
Historical data from the past 10 years show that average daytime highs around this period decline from about 32 degrees Celsius to 29 degrees Celsius in the country. Cheoseo, the 14th of the 24 solar terms, literally means “the heat stops.”
