The Ministry of the Interior and Safety's police oversight bureau was dissolved Tuesday, three years after the Yoon Suk Yeol administration created it to oversee police leadership.

The unit, established in August 2022, had faced heavy criticism for what was seen as the administration’s attempt to exert control over police investigations.

Its dissolution was decided by presidential decree of President Lee Jae Myung and was approved by the Cabinet on Aug. 18.
