South Korea’s last coal mine is set to close, marking the end of an era.

Dogye Mining Station in Samcheok, Gangwon Province, which began operations in 1936, is to officially shut down on Tuesday.

It is the last facility operated by the state-run Korea Coal Corp., following the closures of the Jangseong and Hwasun mining stations in 2024 and 2023, respectively.

The closure effectively signals the end of South Korea’s state-run coal mining industry.
