Logistics company Hyundai Glovis announced Tuesday that it has equipped all 32 of its car carrier ships with an EV drill lance, a specialized fire suppression device designed to quickly extinguish fires in electric vehicles.
An EV drill lance operates by drilling directly into the battery pack of a burning electric vehicle and injecting water. The process takes about two minutes and significantly reduces the risk of a fire spreading. Because vehicles are densely arranged on ships, early fire suppression is crucial to preventing large-scale incidents.
Hyundai Glovis first introduced the device in October on the vessel Glovis Sirius and completed installation across its entire fleet within the year. Additionally, the company is developing a remotely operated EV drill lance to enable safer and faster fire suppression.
To further strengthen its fire response measures, Hyundai Glovis has also implemented the SMIG fire monitoring system, which integrates over 1,000 heat and smoke detectors into a single network. In the event of a fire, SMIG displays the exact fire location on a monitor in the ship’s bridge, allowing crew members to respond swiftly.
The system has already been installed on five vessels and will soon be deployed across the remaining fleet.
“By strengthening our fire response system for finished vehicle transportation, we aim to enhance safety-focused services and improve our business performance,” a Hyundai Glovis official said.
