Fragmented solo projects fuel concerns about girl group’s unified image

Ahead of Blackpink’s highly anticipated full-group comeback this summer, the members have been actively building their solo careers -- a move expected to bolster the group’s overall performance at upcoming world tours.

The members saw remarkable chart success as soloists in 2024 with Jennie’s “Mantra” reaching No. 3 on the Billboard Global 200, Lisa’s “Born Again” debuting at No. 69 on the Billboard Hot 100 and Rose’s hit “APT.” peaking at No. 3 on the main chart -- the highest among female K-pop artists. Jisoo’s latest solo album “Amortage” topped the iTunes album charts in over 39 countries on Feb. 14.

Industry insiders agree that these individual projects will inject fresh energy into the quartet’s reunion. However, YG Entertainment faces mounting management challenges as each member forges their path under different labels following their departure from the agency’s solo division last year.

Jennie’s solo journey has not been without controversy. Last July, she was seen smoking an e-cigarette indoors in Rome while a staffer was doing her makeup. The act violated local laws and sparked criticism from Korean fans, who deemed it illegal and disrespectful.

More recently, her increasingly bold fashion choices have drawn mixed reactions, with some domestic fans taking to social media to post concerns that her risque outfits, reminiscent of Hollywood stars, could tarnish her image as a K-pop idol.

Jisoo, long criticized for her acting skills, failed to silence her detractors with her latest role in the local OTT series “Newtopia,” which premiered on Feb. 7. Many viewers noted that her performance showed little improvement.

Her solo stage for the new song “Earthquake,” released on Feb. 14, was also met with a lukewarm response with critics pointing out a lack of energy in both her vocal delivery and dance performance -- shortcomings that become particularly pronounced when she performs alone.

Lisa’s solo activities have been equally eventful, marked by commercial success and controversy.

During the 2024 Global Citizen Festival in New York City and the MTV VMAs, she faced scrutiny for noticeably lip-syncing while performing her latest song, “Moonlit Floor,” igniting debates about the authenticity of live performances.

Further fueling discussion, her participation in high-profile events such as the Crazy Horse cabaret show and the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show last year divided public opinion. While some praised her bold artistic choices, others criticized them for deviating from the traditionally "innocent" image of K-pop idols.

Adding to the discourse, her rumored relationship with French billionaire heir Frederic Arnault, son of LVMH founder Bernard Arnault, has drawn mixed reactions, with some arguing that such personal decisions conflict with the industry’s conventional expectations for idols.

While these controversies have ignited debate among fans and media, a local entertainment official highlighted the underlying management challenges.

“The members’ diverse solo projects are expanding their artistic horizons, but the fragmented management model makes it difficult to maintain a unified image for Blackpink,” said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “When controversies arise, it’s ultimately the company’s responsibility to handle the fallout.”

Music critic Lim Hee-yun offered a more optimistic perspective on the members' solo ventures.

“I don’t believe these controversies will have a significant negative impact,” Lim said on Friday. “When artists break free from strict company control, they can fully express their individuality and maximize their strengths.

“Although management prefers a safe and controlled approach, stepping outside that comfort zone can help Blackpink shed their ‘cute and safe’ image and embrace a more mature, empowering identity,” Lim added. “Even if there are early missteps, as seen in Jisoo’s case, a full-group tour with high production values can easily make up for them.”
