The floor leader of the ruling People Power Party called Wednesday for a thorough investigation after an elementary school teacher allegedly stabbed an 8-year-old student to death earlier this week.
Rep. Kweon Seong-dong made the calls at a floor meeting at the National Assembly, saying the People Power Party will "do everything in its power to prevent such a tragedy from happening again in schools."
The People Power Party plans to hold consultations with the government to discuss measures to prevent such incidents, according to Kim Sang-hoon, the People Power Party's top policymaker.
"We consider this incident to be a serious threat to the lives and safety of our children, who are our future," Kim said. "We will hold the People Power Party-government consultations swiftly to come up with measures to prevent a recurrence."
On Monday, a female teacher in her 40s stabbed an 8-year-old student to death at an elementary school in the central city of Daejeon. The girl was later pronounced dead at a hospital due to excessive bleeding. (Yonhap)
