Acting President Choi Sang-mok expressed relief Tuesday over the United States' decision to pause additional tariffs on Canada and Mexico for one month but warned of a potential increase in tariffs on other major trading partners.

Choi made the remarks during a meeting with economy-related ministers after President Donald Trump agreed to delay the imposition of steep tariffs for 30 days as the two neighboring countries pledged to strengthen border security efforts.

"This morning, we were relieved to learn that the Trump administration has postponed the implementation of tariffs on Mexico and Canada for one month," Choi said.

However, he voiced concerns over the growing possibility of additional tariff measures targeting other countries, including the European Union.

Choi emphasized that the government will continue to carefully monitor developments and maintain close communication with the US administration to minimize the potential impact on South Korea's export-dependent economy.

Additionally, he reaffirmed the government's commitment to supporting local exporters, particularly small and medium-sized firms with business operations in countries affected by the latest Trump tariff policies. (Yonhap)
