Korean automaker’s new battery electric compact SUV boasts driving distance of up to 473 km per charge

Hyundai Motor India has unveiled the Creta Electric, the Korean automaker’s first made-in-India all-battery electric vehicle, accelerating India’s EV transition and bolstering its presence in the burgeoning auto market.

According to Hyundai Motor India, the automaker revealed the new compact sport utility vehicle through a television commercial starting Thursday that showcases the EV’s bold exterior, sophisticated interior and advanced technological features.

“The Hyundai Creta Electric marks a significant milestone for (Hyundai Motor India) as our first localized electric SUV,” said Tarun Garg, chief operating officer at Hyundai Motor India.

“Hyundai Motor Company has established itself as a pioneer in EV innovation with revolutionary and award winning EVs like Ioniq, and the Hyundai CRETA Electric is no different. Continuing the strong legacy of the Creta brand, the Hyundai Creta Electric combines design, technology and exceptional safety to inspire confidence in electric vehicles among Indian customers.”

Hyundai Motor has sold over 1.1 million units of the internal combustion engine Creta in India since the model's launch in 2015, solidifying its strong presence in the local market.

The Creta Electric will be available with two battery pack options. The long range model equipped with a 51.4 kilowatt-hour battery offers a driving range of up to 473 kilometers per charge while the other option comes with a 42 kWh battery featuring a driving range of 390 km per charge.

Hyundai Motor India noted that the long range model can reach the speed of 100 kph from a standstill in 7.9 seconds. The automaker added that the electric SUV can be charged from 10 percent to 80 percent in 58 minutes using DC charging, while it would take four hours to fully charge the vehicle with AC home charging.

Hyundai is expected to officially launch the Creta Electric at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Expo slated for Jan. 17 in Delhi.

“We are confident that the Hyundai Creta Electric will set a new standard in quality for electric SUVs in India and will redefine the success of EVs in the country,” said Garg.

Hyundai Motor has been actively investing in India’s auto industry as the company’s local body successfully raised $3.3 billion in what went down as India’s biggest initial public offering in Oct. last year. The automaker also announced a plan to install about 600 public EV charging stations over the next seven years to speed up India’s EV adoption.
