South Korea’s intelligence agency confirmed Friday that a North Korean soldier captured by Ukrainian forces has died.

“It’s confirmed through friendly intelligence agencies that the North Korean soldier, captured by Ukrainian forces on Thursday, succumbed to severe injuries,” an official from the National Intelligence Service said Friday afternoon.

The soldier was captured by Ukrainian special forces in the Kursk region of Russia.

According to local reports, North Korea has sent more than 11,000 troops to support Moscow in the war with Ukraine. The soldiers are reportedly stationed primarily in Kursk, a region recently occupied by Ukraine, and have been actively engaged on the front lines.
