The ruling People Power Party and main opposition Democratic Party of Korea on Friday agreed to form a joint consultative body proposed by Speaker Woo Won-shik for addressing national security and the economy.
A similar body was first suggested by the Democratic Party as a way of running the country after President Yoon Suk Yeol was impeached by the National Assembly on Dec. 14.
Rep. Kweon Seong-dong, the ruling party acting chair, told reporters that his party has decided to join the trilateral consultative body bringing the two parties and the government together “to discuss middle-class livelihoods and security.”
He said the ruling party and the speaker’s office were discussing how the body would be run and membered.
Kweon added that the ruling party would also be participating in another proposal by Woo to send a bipartisan team of lawmakers to meet with lawmakers of allied countries. This hopes to fill the foreign diplomacy vacuum during Yoon's suspension from the presidency.
