[What to watch] 'Kim Dae-jung on the Road,' experimental film at Emu Cinema

Away from big blockbusters and crowded multiplex chains, enjoy a cozier and calmer cinema experience at Emu Cinema.

Emu Cinema, located in Jongno-gu, Seoul is part of the four-story building, Emu Art Space, which also houses a bar, a cafe and a gallery. The small cinema screens Korean and foreign-language independent films as well as other non-blockbuster films and classics.

Tickets cost 9,000 won and students get a discount at 8,000 won. For early screenings, seniors, and moviegoers with disabilities, the tickets are 6,000 won.

The film revisits the life of South Korea’s 15th president, Kim Dae-jung, a businessman-turned-politician who suffered multiple attempts on his life as opposition leader and later was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize as president for pursuing engagement with North Korea. This documentary film follows Kim’s life as he leads the country on some of its first steps toward democracy. The film combines unpublished material and archival footage as well as voices of people who shared historic moments with him.

This 2004 film follows two individuals – Joe (Jim Carrey) and Clementine (Kate Winslet) -- who undergo a procedure to erase each other from their memories after they end their relationship. During the clinical procedure, Joe realizes that he still loves Clementine.

This film is being screened as part of Emu Cinema’s special screening program.

This 2001 experimental coming-of-age film portrays the life of a Japanese youth whose peer group leads him to get caught up in crime. His only sanctuary, even salvation, is the dreamy music of pop star Lily Chou-Chou, which he chats about on the internet. The film is in Japanese with Korean subtitles.
