Hyundai Motor Co., South Korea's leading carmaker, has sold more than 2 million vehicles in Canada since its debut in the market more than three decades ago, industry sources said Friday.

Since 1984 when it first exported its cars to Canada, its cumulative overseas shipments to the North American country came to 2,005,801 units in April, according to the sources.

Hyundai Motor's sales there slumped in the 1990s, and its cumulative sales could not exceed the 1 million mark until 2008.

But sales picked up in the following years with its annual shipments to Canada exceeding 100,000 units for the first time in 2009.

Last year, its annual sales hit an all-time high of 135,612 units.

In line with the expanded sales, Hyundai Motor's market share in Canada also grew from around 1 percent in the 1990s to 7.1 percent last year.

The compact Elantra, known in South Korea as the Avante, was the best seller, with its cumulative sales topping 500,000 units.

The Accent, a subcompact, and the Santa Fe SUV came next with sales of 419,227 and 298,493 units, respectively.

During the January-April period of this year, the automaker's sales in Canada came to 42,414 units, down 0.1 percent from a year earlier, the data showed. (Yonhap)
