정부와 새누리당이 안전확보가 되지 않은 체험캠프를 퇴출하기로 23일 약속했다.
서남수 교육부 장관은 이날 “모든 체험활동에 대해서 안전 여부를 즉각 확인하고 안전이 확보되지 않은 경우에는 체험학습을 즉각 중단하도록 조취를 취하겠다,”고 밝혔다.
지난 19일, 다섯명의 공주사대부고 학생들이 충남 태안의 사설 해병대 훈련 캠프 도중 익사하는 사고가 발생한지 일주일이 지나지 않아 나온 발언이다.
서 장관은 “학부모는 학교를 믿고 학생들을 행사에 보냈는데 그런 일이 벌어지고 나니 정말로 학교 교육을 책임지는 사람으로서 얼굴을 들 수 없게 됐다”면서 학교가 실시하는 체험활동의 안전 여부를 확인하겠다고 강조했다.
이혜훈 새누리당 의원은 체험캠프가 급증하고 있는 상황에서 필요한 규제를 하는데 정부가 실패했다고 말했다.
황우여 대표는 많은 체험캠프들이 정부로부터 승인이 나지 않은 사설업체에 의해 운영된다는 점을 지적하며, 체험학습이 학생들을 평가하는 종목 중 하나가 된 만큼 사설캠프가 늘어난 추세라고 말했다.
박근혜 대통령은 공주사대부고 다섯명 학생들의 죽음과 관련해 “학교 방학과 전국적인 여름캠프 활동 시기를 맞아 선제적 점검과 대응으로 안전사고 예방에 만전을 기해달라”며 당부했다.

Government vows to control unauthorized youth camps

The government and ruling party on Tuesday vowed to stop youth summer camps with any safety or security concerns.
“We‘ll check all outdoor camps and force to stop them running unless safety of students is assured,” Education Minister Seo Nam-soo said at a government-ruling party meeting.
His remarks came less than a week after five teenagers drowned at a private seaside summer camp at Taean Beach, South Chungcheong Province.
“The incident accrued during the outdoor school activity, and I feel a great responsibility for that as the one in charge of school education,” Seo said, noting that he would make sure education offices checked and monitored schools’ outdoor activity plans.
Rep. Lee Hye-hoon of the Saenuri Party said the number of youth camps was growing rapidly but the government was failing to impose necessary regulations.
The party chairman Hwang Woo-yeo pointed out that many youth camps were run by unauthorized private firms.
“Outdoor school activities have become a part of student assessment and now there are so many unregulated camps luring students,” Hwang said, urging the government to enhance oversight of outdoor school activities.
President Park Geun-hye also said Monday that she would direct the government to enhance safety following the deaths of the teenagers from a high school affiliated with Gongju National University.
Meanwhile, the Education Ministry, which fired the principal of the high school, is now conducting a special audit into the high school.(596story@heraldcorp.com)
