미국 아이비리그 명문대학 인 프린스턴대학에서 한국인 교수가 아시아계로는 처음으로 부총장에 임명됐다.
프린스턴대학은 최근 차기 부총장으로 데이비드 리 (한국명 이상윤.41) 교수를 내정했다고 밝혔다. 아시아인이 부총장 직에 오른 것은 이 교수가 처음이다.
크리스토퍼 아이스그루버 차기 총장은, “이 교수가 부총장 직을 맡게 돼서 매우 기쁘다”라고 말했다.
아이스그루버 차기 총장은 이 교수는 훌륭한 학자로서, 뛰어난 판단력, 행정력 그리고 동료애를 지니고 있다”고 이 교수를 높이 평가했다.
이 교수는 아이스그루버 차기 총장과 여러 차례 대화를 나눈 뒤 부총장으로서 학교에 기여할 수 있는 부분이 크다는 사실을 깨달았다고 밝혔으며, “총장으로서의 앞날이 기대된다” 라고 덧붙였다.
이 교수는 오는 7월 1일부터 프린스턴대의 교육과 재정 등 전반적인 업무를 책임지게 된다.
올해 41세인 이 교수는 현재 프린스턴대에서 경제학과 교수로 재직 중이며, 하버드대에서 경제학을 전공, 프린스턴대에서 석사, 박사 학위를 취득했다.
이후 콜럼비아대와 UC버클리, 하버드대 등에서 경제학 교수를 지낸 뒤, 2007년부터 프린스턴대 교수로 강단에 섰다.
이 교수의 부인 크리스티나 리도 프린스턴의 스페인, 포르투갈어 및 문화학과에서 연구 교수로 일하고 있으며, 슬하에 딸과 최근 태어난 아들을 두고 있다. (코리아헤럴드 윤민식 기자/ 번역 최인정 인턴기자)

Princeton names Korean as 1st Asian provost
David S. Lee, a U.S. scholar of Korean descent, was recently appointed Princeton’s new provost, becoming the first Asian to hold the post at the prestigious U.S. school.
“I am delighted that David Lee has agreed to serve as Princeton’s next provost,” Princeton’s president-elect Christopher Eisgruber said in announcing the appointment last week.
According to the university’s website, Eisgruber praises Lee as an “outstanding scholar” with good judgment, administrative skills and generous collegiality.
Lee said that after talking to Eisgruber, he came to realize the job would be a “fantastic way in which to serve Princeton.”
“I am very excited to take on the challenge,” he said.
Starting from July 1, Lee will serve as the Ivy League school’s chief academic and budgetary officer.
The 41-year-old Lee, currently professor of economics and public affairs at Princeton, has a bachelor’s degree in economics from Harvard University and a master’s and Ph.D. in economics from Princeton.
He worked as a professor of economics at Columbia University and an assistant professor at the University of California at Berkeley and Harvard before joining the Princeton faculty in 2007.
Lee is married to Christina Lee, an associate research scholar at Princeton’s department of Spanish and Portuguese Languages and Cultures. The couple has a daughter and a newborn son. (minsikyoon@heraldcorp.com)
