[Dan Thomasson] Will voters tire of Trump’s outrageous rhetoric?
Apparently, Donald Trump’s Republican fans don’t mind what he says or how he says it. They love him anyway. Mr. Outrageous is writing an entirely new handbook on political insensitivity, often in graphic language. In doing so he is throwing out all the rules on intemperate remarks by slandering cultures, religions and people. The anti-Catholic rhetoric of “Rum, Romanism and Rebellion” that long ago ended a candidate’s career and set the standard for temperance on the stump seems as passe as poli

[Bunn Nagara] Global community far from ending IS terror
The sordid trail of death and destruction perpetrated by so-called Islamic State IS militants continues to grow longer and bloodier.Reports of more threats, attacks and beheading of hostages, random prisoners and those simply refusing to conform grow in number and detail. At the same time, official rhetoric against such barbarities is cranked up between global capitals. The only effect seems to be just more of the same.A tragic sense of surreal doom envelopes all that IS touches. However, the fau

[Weekender] A sword that cuts both ways
Satire, which was pushed to the fore following the Charlie Hebdo affair in January, is an irreverent art form that intends to shock, provoke and offend, aiming to elicit a change in perspective through sometimes taboo representations. But the shock and grief in the wake of the Jan. 7 Paris shootings was accompanied by considerable anger by more moderate Muslims. Their reaction to the cartoons showed that satire is a double-edged sword that can be used against marginalized people, and should there

Why authors decide to self-publish
“I should write a book.” We’ve all heard that statement before from friends or family or co-workers. We might even have said it ourselves. We all have stories to tell, whether real or fictional. In the past, those who wrote a book faced a limited number of options: They shopped their manuscripts around to agents and editors at publishers, a process that could take years, if ever. Alternatively, they could contract with a vanity press for production that could cost them thousands of dollars. They

A garden of garments: Fashion’s a fabulous flower show this spring
PHILADELPHIA ― Designers pulled a bunch of pretty, petaled patterns from their graphic arsenals this spring, planting them generously all over sheaths and trousers, jumpsuits and shorts. The idea, of course, was to get women so excited about the sweet peony prints that they would start shopping well before the first crocuses of spring. The last time flowers were this fashionable was the early ’90s ― so most of our closets had nary a bud. And coincidentally, it also helped that we needed a boost a
