Two airplanes collided at Gimpo Airport around 8:10 a.m., resulting in damage to the jets and delays in takeoff, the Transport Ministry said Tuesday.

Asiana Airlines A330’s wing crashed with the tail of the Korean Air B777 that was waiting near the taxiway, breaking its wing as well as the other plane’s tail and wing. The Korean Air flight was bound for Osaka, and the Asiana Airlines’ plane for Beijing.

The collision delayed the departure of both planes by four hours, authorities said.

No passenger was aboard either of the planes as they were moving toward the gate to board passengers, the air carriers said. Mechanic staff on board each plane were unharmed.

Both air carriers blamed each other for the accident.

Korean Air claimed that its plane was waiting after the control tower ordered that the plane stop for a moment, adding that the Asiana Airlines plane passed by and hit its wing.

Asiana Airlines, for its part, said it was moving ordinarily based on an order from the control tower, and that it was Korean Air’s fault for having stopped in the middle of moving near the taxiway.

Airport authorities said they are looking into the cause of the accident.

The ministry also said that since both planes were moving by orders from the control tower, there are possibilities that the error came from the control tower or the staff on a towing car. By Kim Da-sol (ddd@heraldcorp.com)
