South Korea said Tuesday it is in talks with a United Nations agency over its possible financial support for a UN census on North Korea.

South Korea's unification ministry said that it is "positively" considering contributing $6 million for the 2018 survey of the North's population to be conducted by the United Nations Population Fund.

"As the government sees the need for support, it is positively considering it," a ministry official said.

North Korea earlier said that it plans to conduct a preliminary survey of its population in October with technical support from the UNFPA.

The ministry earlier said that financing part of the project will be a good chance to grasp the current state of the North Korean population with reliable international methods.

It would mark the North's first census since 2008, when the South provided Pyongyang with $4 million by tapping its inter-Korean cooperation fund. (Yonhap)
