An international symposium aimed at promoting cooperation in global peacekeeping operations will be held in South Korea next week, the foreign ministry said Friday.

The International Partnership for Technology in Peacekeeping Symposium will kick off on Monday for a five-day run, according to the ministry.

The symposium marks the third of its kind following gatherings in Italy and Austria in 2014 and 2015, respectively.

The Seoul event will be hosted jointly by the foreign and defense ministries here in cooperation with the United Nations.

Around 300 participants, including UN officials and experts involved in peacekeeping efforts, will discuss ways to expand cooperation in geographic information systems, surveillance, and other technological areas.

South Korea has been involved in global peacekeeping operations to the tune of dispatching a combined 14,000 troops on 18 different missions since 1993. Currently, it is joining peacekeeping efforts in Lebanon and South Sudan.

Last year, it spent about 160 billion won ($139.9 million) in supporting UN peacekeeping efforts, the 12th largest among member countries, the ministry said. (Yonhap)
